Man Struck and Killed in Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash on US-221
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that two drivers ran over and killed a pedestrian late last week. Police released information about the crash and stated that the drivers might believe that they struck a deer, but that they should come forward and report to police because the actual victim was pedestrian.*
The incident took place on Ware Road later in the evening. One vehicle struck the man and stopped, but two additional vehicles then ran over the victim, killing him at the scene.
The drivers were traveling northbound on US 221 when the incident took place. The first driver remained at the scene and called for help.
The Spartanburg County Coroner identified the victim as a 53-year-old man from Chesnee. Police are searching for the other drivers and requesting that anyone with information come forward and report to law enforcement.
Hit-and-run crashes are becoming increasingly common around the United States. The most common victims in the worst hit-and-run incidents are pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians are becoming a higher percentage of all fatal vehicle-related deaths around the country. Many of these accidents occur at night when visibility is an issue for drivers. When a vehicle strikes a person, the damage to the vehicle is often minimal, meaning that the driver will be able to leave because their vehicle is not damaged. Identifying the drivers in these cases can be extremely difficult, especially if the crash happened at night and without any witnesses.
Fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime. When a driver is involved in a crash, that person is legally obligated to stay at the scene and render aid if possible.
