One Dead in Tragic Two-Car Accident in Sumter, South Carolina
SUMTER, SC- Wltx.com writes that a car accident in Sumter killed one individual earlier this week. Police identified the victim as a 70-year-old man from Manning. The crash took place on Pinewood Road in the early afternoon.*
Reports indicate that a 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling northbound veered across the center line and into southbound traffic where it struck a 2016 Toyota. The head-on collision caused severe injuries to both drivers and a passenger traveling in the Chevrolet. Emergency responders transferred the drivers to the hospital via airlift. There are currently no reports regarding the status of the three injured individuals.
The victim had been traveling in the Toyota at the time of the crash. Police say that the man had his seatbelt fastened.
Head-on collisions are frightening because they are one way in which good drivers can be killed without having made any errors. When traveling on an undivided roadway, a car moving in the opposite direction can easily cross over the center line because of a drunk, distracted, or drowsy driver. Unfortunately, it only takes a split second of looking at a radio dial to drift enough to end up colliding with an oncoming vehicle. For the person driving the correct direction, the crash happens so quickly that there is no time to swerve or apply the brakes. The forces involved in these crashes are immense, and even if occupants have seatbelts and airbags in their vehicles, the results can be deadly.
