Chesterfield Couple Tragically Die in Florence, South Carolina Crash
FLORENCE, SC – According to an online news report at wric.com, three individuals, including a couple from Chesterfield, Virginia, tragically died in an accident involving an 18-wheeler.*
The victims were identified as a 30-year old man and his 30-year-old partner, from Chesterfield, Virginia. Another individual, a 53-year-old woman from Chesapeake, Virginia, was also involved in the wreck.
Per an investigation of the accident, it occurred on Interstate 95 at mile marker 157. This is close to the Highway 76 exit. A tractor-trailer was headed north on Interstate 95. For reasons that are unknown, the truck crossed over the median and struck a Mazda and Toyota truck that were headed southbound on the roadway.
In one recent year, 18-wheelers account for 67 of the 1,020 vehicles that were involved in fatal accidents in South Carolina. During that year, these accidents accounted for 6.5% of the deadly accidents in the state. These accidents claimed the life of 49 occupants of other vehicles, ten truckers, and six others who were not in an automobile (bikers and pedestrians).
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 18-wheelers accounted for nine percent of all vehicles involved in deadly accidents nationwide. They also accounted for three percent of crashes that resulted in property damage or injuries.
NHTSA reports, in a recent year, that 3,964 individuals died in truck accidents in the United States, and about 342,000 of 18-wheelers were involved in traffic accidents. In that year, 71 percent of the deaths were occupants of passenger vehicles, while 11 percent were not in their vehicle, and 17 percent were occupants of 18-wheelers.
