Man on Nationwide Bicycle Journey Tragically Killed in Accident in Columbia, South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC. – According to an online news report posted at ncadvertiser.com, a man who was on a bicycle journey across the United States was tragically killed in a traffic accident in Columbia, South Carolina. The details of the accident have not been fully reported, and it is unclear if any charges will be filed.*

The accident happened during the afternoon on the westbound side of U.S. Highway 378. South Carolina Highway Patrol and the New Canaan Advertiser report that around 12:15 p.m., a bicyclist was riding in the area and was struck by a vehicle. It is not clear at this time how the accident occurred or what led to the collision. The report did not say how the two came to collide.

No information about the vehicle was reported except that it was a delivery vehicle. The report did not say for what company the vehicle was making deliveries. Troopers have not yet indicated what circumstances were involved in the accident or whether the delivery driver was at fault.

The New Canaan Advertiser reports that the cyclist was tragically killed in the crash. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as a 27-year-old man from Busan, South Korea. The man was reportedly in the process of completing a trek across the United States on his bicycle. The president of the Cola Town Bike Collective told reporters that the victim started the journey in October in New York and planned to reach California by January. 

The driver of the delivery truck has not been identified at this time, and it is not clear from the report if he or she was injured in the accident. South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate this collision, and Troopers have not said whether they anticipate charges in the case.
