Morning Collision Blocks Rush Hour Traffic Heading to Columbia, South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C.- The newsobserver.com writes that a crash occurred early this week on Interstate 20 while drivers were heading to work in Columbia, South Carolina. The accident led to the closure of one of the eastbound lanes. The incident occurred near Exit 58 in the early morning hours. The highway is normally busy but was moving even slower than normal because of the crash.*
Video from the area indicated that one vehicle had to be moved from the road by a patrol car. Reports did not include information about the cause of the accident or the nature of any injuries.
Rush hour traffic often causes crashes because of the congestion. More vehicles on the road often translate as a greater risk of collisions. Statistically, afternoon rush hour crashes are more common than morning rush hour accidents, but any time when there are more vehicles on the road, there is likely going to be more collisions.
Drivers rushing to and from work may also be more likely to get involved in crashes because of distractions, frustration, or fatigue. In many cases, drivers stuck for long periods of time may become aggravated by the traffic conditions leading to impulsive or dangerous driving such as speeding or following vehicles too closely. It is important for drivers to stay focused on the road and avoid the temptation to pass the boring time stuck in traffic by looking at cell phones or other distractions. Additionally, if a driver finds that they are getting angry and frustrated, it might be time to pull over. Aggressive driving and road rage are responsible for a high number of crashes every year.
