Police Investigate Pedestrian Accident in Charleston, South Carolina
CHARLESTON, SC- Abcnews4.com writes that a pedestrian crash took place in the evening on 230 Spring Street. The individual was hit in front of a McDonald’s restaurant late last week. The authorities have not released any information about the pedestrian’s identity or condition, but state that the individual was taken to the MUSC for treatment of the injuries.*
Pedestrians are dying by the hundreds in South Carolina. Cyclists, too, are at a significant risk of dying in a vehicle accident in the state. Over the past six years, South Carolina has lost over 900 lives to cyclist and pedestrian incidents, making the state's roadways some of the most dangerous in the country.
Per capita, the state was found to have the sixth-highest rate of pedestrian deaths. The numbers have alerted the government to the need for change and safety improvements on the state’s roadways. Law enforcement officials lament the preventable nature of pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the State. Police say they are taking steps to talk to pedestrians who they see crossing outside of protected crosswalks and intersections in order to educate them about the risks and the number of lives that are being lost in these types of accidents.
While educating the public about safety risks is one part of the puzzle, the approach is also going to require changes to the state's infrastructure. Protected bike lanes help to reduce the risk to cyclists, and the state is looking at some of the most dangerous intersections and making improvements.
One obstacle is funding. Improving infrastructure will cost millions, and even if all of the proposed safety improvements are completed, the state will suffer accidents because many of the deaths occur outside of protected intersections and involve pedestrians and drivers failing to pay attention.
