Two Men Seriously Injured in Fiery Head-On Crash in Colleton County, South Carolina
COLLETON COUNTY, SC – According to an online news report at walterborolive.com, a fiery head-on crash at the intersection of Thunderbolt Drive and Tuskegee Airman Drive caused two men to sustain serious injuries.*
It appears from a preliminary investigation of the crash that a log truck headed southbound crashed into a GMC dump truck. The log truck flipped over and spilled logs all over the roadway. One of the logs penetrated the cab of the truck, which ultimately struck the driver. The dump truck that was headed northbound flipped over and became engulfed in flames.
Several individuals who at a local business witnessed the accident and came upon the scene to render aid. One of the workers was able to open the passenger side of the dump truck and pull the injured driver out of the fiery truck. Other individuals were able to extract the log truck driver from his vehicle.
Emergency personnel, within minutes after the call, arrived at the scene to find Thunderbolt Drive completely blocked by logs and wreckage. The cab of the dump truck, when they arrived, had been engulfed in flames.
Firefighters, paramedics and a nurse who happened to be off-duty at the time of the crash treated the patients at the scene. The dump truck driver was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. The driver of the log truck was flown to an area trauma center in Charleston.
There are no further details on the accident at this time. It is not clear what caused the accident. The identity of the individuals involved in the accident has not been publicly released. The accident remains under investigation by the State Transport Police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
