Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle on 1800 block of Sam Rittenburg in West Ashley, South Carolina

WEST ASHLEY, SC- Live5news.com writes that a person was struck by a vehicle earlier this week in the evening in West Ashley. The incident occurred on the 1800 block of Sam Rittenburg in front of a Church’s Chicken.*

Emergency responders were called to the scene of the accident and rushed the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The northbound lanes of traffic were closed while the incident was investigated. 

South Carolina has one of the worst pedestrian fatality rates in the country. According to a recent report issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association, South Carolina comes in sixth out of all states in terms of per capita pedestrian deaths. 

Pedestrian fatalities are not just high in South Carolina. In recent years, pedestrian fatalities have been rising even while vehicle occupant deaths have been on the decline. As a result, the percentage of pedestrians in overall traffic-related deaths has increased to its highest level in decades. Cyclists are also finding themselves in great danger on the nation’s roads. 

While manufacturers have been making vehicles safer for those riding inside of them, the larger vehicles, such as SUVs, which are becoming more popular with American consumers, are presenting greater risks to people traveling on foot or on bikes. Vehicles such as SUVs are more likely to cause severe injuries or death to pedestrians because these vehicles are larger and hit higher on the victim’s body. Fortunately, vehicles are now being made with pedestrian safety in mind as well as occupant safety. With better pedestrian detecting technology, drivers may be able to avoid many of these accidents. 

Better designed roads, education, and enforcement of traffic laws are other possible solutions to the high number of pedestrians who become victims each year in the United States.
