Hit-and-Run Driver Tragically Kills Pedestrian in Dillon County, South Carolina

October 28, 2019

DILLON COUNTY, SC- Wmbfnews.com writes that a deadly pedestrian accident occurred in Dillon County, South Carolina, earlier this week. Reports indicate that the driver responsible for the incident fled the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred on U.S. 301 in front of a Maxway store during the evening.*

As of several hours after the incident, the police still did not have a description of the vehicle that struck the victim. Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the tragic incident come forward.

Hit-and-run crashes frequently occur across the United States. Police who have investigated these crimes say that the drivers who choose to flee after striking an object or person are often people who are under the influence, have warrants out for their arrests, or who do not have a valid driver’s license. The penalties for causing even property damage and then fleeing the scene of an accident are severe. In fact, a driver who leaves the scene of an accident that he or she did not cause can still be found liable for leaving the scene of a crash.

In South Carolina, a driver who flees the site of a crash that only involved property damage can face 30 days in jail. In the event of a deadly hit-and-run crash, the fleeing driver can be charged with a felony and a maximum of 25 years in prison. Of course, these drivers can also lose their licenses.

While hit-and-run drivers face serious consequences, many of them are able to flee after a crash and never face any charges. Witnesses are crucial when it comes to finding the person responsible for a hit-and-run accident.
