School Bus Crash Injures Two on I-85 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina

October 14, 2019

SPARTANBURG, SC- Foxcarolina.com reports that police responded to an early morning crash in Spartanburg County on I-85 involving a school bus. No children were aboard the school bus at the time of the accident, but two people were injured in the crash. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries.*

According to reports from the state troopers, the collision involved the bus and a tractor-trailer. The school bus appears to have stalled, and the truck hit the bus from behind. One traffic lane was closed down during the investigation.

School bus crashes are uncommon, but when they occur, they often receive a great deal of media attention. School bus design is focused on making these vehicles the safest on the road. The standards for these buses are much higher than for other types of passenger buses. Statistically, students who take a school bus are far more likely to arrive at their school safely than are students who walk or ride in a passenger vehicle.

Even the color of school buses is designed to be visible to other drivers on the road, making it less likely that other drivers will fail to see the school bus.

As safe as school buses are, there are still crashes involving school buses every year, and they do sometimes cause injuries and fatalities. Lawmakers in some states have pushed to increase the safety of these vehicles by making seatbelts mandatory. Currently, many school buses are not equipped with seatbelts. While the buses are designed to be safe for students even without requiring seatbelts, many safety advocates say that the buses should still have any and all available safety equipment.
