South Carolina Home to Several of Nation's Deadliest Roadways

August 19, 2020

COLUMBIA, SC- Wistv.com writes that five roads in South Carolina made the list of the deadliest highways in the nation. The roads include Interstate 95, Interstate 26, Interstate 20, Highway 17, and Interstate 85. The list, which includes the 25 deadliest roads, was developed using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).*

The deadliest road in the state was Interstate 95, which .730 fatalities per every mile of the highway.

South Carolina has made the top of several lists when it comes to dangerous driving. One recent report determined that the state is in the top ten worst states for drunk driving. The Palmetto State landed in eighth place, just behind North Carolina, on that list.

Another study indicated that South Carolina is the third deadliest state in which to operate a car. Some researchers suggest that the reason the state falls on that list is that the laws in South Carolina are not doing a good enough job of preventing people from driving while distracted by their phones. Motorists are not allowed to text and drive, but phones are not entirely prohibited for use by motorists in South Carolina. As such, few distracted driving violations are issued as compared to other states.

In general, the southeast performs fairly poorly when it comes to traffic safety. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that overall crash-related deaths dropped by about 1.2 percent across the country. Declines were noted in nine out of ten regions throughout the nation. The only region that saw an increase was the southeast, which consists of five states, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. In that part of the country, such fatalities increased by about two percent. The NHTSA did not provide a reason for that increase.
