Police in South Carolina Working to Prevent Speeding-Related Wrecks
SUMTER, SC- Theitem.com writes that police in Sumter are working on cutting down on deadly crashes caused by speeding motorists in the Palmetto State.*
In several states, including South Carolina, officers are working to target speeding motorists and lower instances of speeding. In addition to South Carolina, law enforcement officers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee are working on cutting down on deadly crashes.
Operation Southern Shield works to educate the public on topics related to road safety. With the Rise in summer traffic, officers say it is important that motorists behave responsibly to prevent a spike in deadly crashes.
Crashes that are deemed speed-related are those in which one of the involved vehicles was traveling above the speed limit, or at speeds that are too fast for roadway conditions.
Between the start of 2020 and mid-July, officers say that 180 people lost their lives in crashes caused by drivers speeding on the state’s roads.
Officers say that in bad weather and around bikes, drivers may have to lower their speed limit to below that which is posted on signs. Work areas and construction sites can also mean that motorists have to travel slower than posted speed limits. The Sumter County police issued 2,900 speeding tickets in 2019. Dozens of people have died in the county in speed-related crashes over the past five years.
