Horry County Has the Highest Number of Traffic Accident Deaths in South Carolina

May 27, 2020

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. - According to a news report published on WPDE.com, Horry County has the greatest number of traffic accident-related deaths in South Carolina.  The report indicates that in 2019 there were 738 people who tragically lost their lives on South Carolina roads. Sixty-one of those fatalities are from crashes that occurred in Horry County.  This is substantial, showing that more than 8% of South Carolina's traffic deaths occurred in Horry County in 2019.

Charleston County had the second-highest number of traffic accident deaths, with 57 accident deaths in 2019.  South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Sonny Collins stated that speeding is the number one reason for the fatal accidents occur followed by failure to yield to the right of way, and then failure to wear a seat belt.

Corporal Collins also stated that Horry County saw an increase in the number of fatal accidents due to the increasing number of pedestrian accidents and the increased number of intoxicated drivers on the road.  When these two factors are included in the fatal accident statistics, the number of fatal traffic accidents increases exponentially.  For example, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported 17 deadly pedestrian-involved accidents in Horry County, South Carolina.  Corporal Sonny Collins also stated that these accidents occur more frequently along the coastal region and in the rural part of Horry County.  Officers report it is much more difficult to use high visibility law enforcement to reduce speeding and drunk driving in such a large area such as Horry County.

In order to prevent a tragedy,  drivers should obey speed limits, wear their seat belts, avoid distracted driving, and have a designated sober driver.
