South Carolina Ranks in the Ten Worst States for Speeding

April 21, 2020

SOUTH CAROLINA- The annistonstar.com writes that drivers in South Carolina rank fourth in the nation when it comes to receiving speeding violations. Statistics indicate that more than sixteen percent of the state's motorists have been ticketed for speed-related infringements. Nearly three percent of the motorists have suspended driver's licenses.*

Only two states on the East Coast ranked among the ten worst states for speeding. With a speeding record that is 43 percent higher than the average across the United States, the Palmetto State finds itself on the list of dangerous drivers with a need for speed. Three of the state's cities, including Clemson, Clinton, and Barnwell, all fell into the top ten cities worst for speeding in the country when evaluated by speeding citations.

One factor that seems to increase the risk of drivers speeding is rural roads with fewer vehicles. The more room to move on the roadway, the more likely it is that drivers will pick up speed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding led to 9,378 collisions in 2018.

Speeding comes with a host of consequences for drivers. With increased speed comes a greater risk of losing control of a vehicle, and therefore the likelihood of a crash also increases. When cars are traveling at high speeds, protective features become less effective. Speeding motorists also require more time to stop their vehicles in the event of an emergency.

When collisions occur at higher speeds, the severity of the damage and the resulting injuries increases. Drivers often feel the need to speed up because of pressure because they are running late.  Drivers are often surprised to learn how little time they save by speeding.
