Semi Strikes Van Killing Ten-Year-Old in Tragic Jacksonville Crash
JACKSONVILLE, FL- News4jax.com writes that a boy tragically died in a horrific crash that took place on Highway 301 earlier this week. The incident occurred when an eastbound tractor-trailer crossed over the centerline in the roadway and slid into the westbound lanes. Reports indicate that the truck flipped onto its side and hit the Honda van in which the boy and his mother were traveling.*
Responders declared the victim dead at the scene of the crash. The mother was trapped inside the vehicle and severely injured. She was taken to the hospital via a helicopter.
The man operating the truck did not sustain any injuries in the collision. Following the crash, the authorities shut down all the westbound lanes. Police say the ground was wet, which may have contributed to the truck overturning.
Officers are conducting standard investigations into the driver, including inspecting his log to determine how long he had been driving at the time of the crash, and are performing tests to check the trucker for drug or alcohol use.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the trucker was cooperating with officers.
The victim’s family has involved a Westside church, and the pastor stated that the hospital employees were “blown away” by how many people showed up to support the grieving family with prayer.
