SOUTH CAROLINA - A news article published on postandcourier.com reports that fatal traffic accidents are starting to rise again in South Carolina. The number of deadly accidents in the state dropped last year during the coronavirus pandemic stay-at-home orders. According to crash data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, there have been over 460 fatal collisions in the first half of 2021, as compared to 430 fatal accidents during the first half of 2020. In those accidents, more than 500 people were tragically killed this year compared with 486 in 2020. 

BARNWELL COUNTY, SC - A news report on wrdw.com stated that a fatal accident happened in Barnwell County, South Carolina.*  According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened at around 11:44 AM along Kingfisher Road by Catfish Road.

AIKEN, SC - A news report posted on wrdw.com is reporting that several motor vehicles were involved in a multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday morning.* The crash closed down an Aiken-area thoroughfare. The accident was reported at approximately 9:20 a.m. at Dibble Road and Hitchcock Parkway.

COLUMBIA, SC- Wistv.com writes that five roads in South Carolina made the list of the deadliest highways in the nation. The roads include Interstate 95, Interstate 26, Interstate 20, Highway 17, and Interstate 85. The list, which includes the 25 deadliest roads, was developed using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).*

South Carolina- About 30 percent of crashes in South Carolina were caused by motorists who were under the influence of alcohol.*

MULLINS, SC- Wnbfnews.com writes that a hit-and-run crash took place in Mullins this week that led to the death of a local 25-year-old woman. Responders rushed the victim to Marion Hospital and were attempting to transfer her to Grand Strand Medical Center when she died.*

SUMTER, SC- Theitem.com writes that police in Sumter are working on cutting down on deadly crashes caused by speeding motorists in the Palmetto State.* 

COLUMBIA, SC— A study recently released by company, Insurify, ranked South Carolina as having a higher car crash accident rate than 43 other states in the United States. Insurify mined data and researched over 2.5 million auto insurance applicants to determine which state has the highest accident rate overall. 

CHESNEE, SC- Wspa.com writes that a driver struck and killed a pedestrian this week in Chesnee. The victim, identified as a 52-year-old man, was struck on McAbee Road close to Horseshoe Circle in the late evening.*

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. - According to a news report published on WPDE.com, Horry County has the greatest number of traffic accident-related deaths in South Carolina.  The report indicates that in 2019 there were 738 people who tragically lost their lives on South Carolina roads. Sixty-one of those fatalities are from crashes that occurred in Horry County.  This is substantial, showing that more than 8% of South Carolina's traffic deaths occurred in Horry County in 2019.

SOUTH CAROLINA- The annistonstar.com writes that drivers in South Carolina rank fourth in the nation when it comes to receiving speeding violations. Statistics indicate that more than sixteen percent of the state's motorists have been ticketed for speed-related infringements. Nearly three percent of the motorists have suspended driver's licenses.*

SOUTH CAROLINA- Indexjournal.com writes that while drivers often complain about bad drivers in their state, some states are actually worse than others. A recent study stated that South Carolina is tied in eleventh place with Kentucky when it comes to the worst drivers in the United States.*

JACKSONVILLE, FL- News4jax.com writes that a boy tragically died in a horrific crash that took place on Highway 301 earlier this week. The incident occurred when an eastbound tractor-trailer crossed over the centerline in the roadway and slid into the westbound lanes. Reports indicate that the truck flipped onto its side and hit the Honda van in which the boy and his mother were traveling.*

A recent study indicates that drugs and alcohol contribute to a large number of fatal vehicle accidents in South Carolina. The study, conducted by alcohol.org, shows that South Carolina has one of the highest fatal drunk driving crash rates in the United States.

The number of deadly traffic accidents involving motorcyclists rose in South Carolina in 2019, according to data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The reasons for the increase are varied, but many officials and motorcycle advocates say distracted and inattentive driving played major roles.
