Quick Facts About The Dangers Of Motorcycle Riding

While riding a motorcycle can be liberating and exhilarating, it can also be extremely dangerous. Many hazards careful riders encounter lurk along the streets and highways of the Southeast. Consider:

  • Motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to be killed in a crash than an occupant of a passenger car; and
  • Motorcycle riders are six times more likely than the passenger of a car to be injured.

Motorcyclists, therefore, must learn to be vigilant when riding. Riders have the additional challenge of watching out for other drivers while trying to maintain control over their bikes to avoid collisions or spills, both of which can kill or seriously injure them.

Practicing Safe Motorcycle Riding May Prevent Crashes

Operating a motorcycle safely requires the rider to learn skills that are different from driving a car. The rules of the road are the same for bikes and cars but having a driver's license does not equate to having the requisite skill, judgment, and experience to ride a motorcycle safely.

Driving a car and riding a motorcycle requires different skill sets, and those that have never ridden a motorcycle may not fully appreciate the actual differences between operating the two vehicles.  For instance, many drivers fail to recognize that motorcycle riders must be able to maintain their balance at all times when riding. Passenger vehicle operators do not have that additional challenge. Accordingly, motorcycle riders need to train and learn good judgment so as to understand how to avoid collisions and spills as well as how to quickly extricate themselves from potentially lethal situations.

Tips To Increase Motorcycle Riding Safety

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, a motorcycle operator can implement several techniques to develop good and safe riding habits. Motorcycle riders should:

  • Get the appropriate license or endorsement to ride a motorcycle. Every state has a law that requires motorcycle operators to obtain either a motorcycle license or an attachment to their driver's license permitting them to operate a motorcycle lawfully. States vary on whether you must take a state-run safety course before getting their license.
  • Practice riding your motorcycle. Inexperience on a bike can be a killer. Go to a safe area and learn to ride, especially if you have a new bike. You should find out how it rides and brakes, as well as become accustomed to its weight and tipping point, before going out on the open road.
  • Perform safety checks on tire pressure, tire treads, and braking systems.
  • Wear a helmet and protective eyewear. Donning leather gear might also prevent against road rash if you tip over and slide.
  • Always ride sober. Impaired driving clouds judgment, depth perception, and reaction time. You need all three of those skills to ride safely.

Even the safest most experienced biker enthusiasts are at serious risk of injury due to the negligence of other drivers.  Motorcyclists who have been injured in an accident that may have been the fault of another driver should contact Montlick and Associates as soon as possible.
