Recent Lawsuit Filed Against Charlotte and American Airlines
CHARLOTTE, NC- A worker tragically died in an accident while working at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport last year and his parents are now suing the airline and the city of Charlotte as a result, according to the CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.COM. The horrible incident occurred when the victim, a 24-year-old man, was transporting luggage while operating an airport vehicle known as a tug. While operating the tug, nearing concourse E, the victim man saw a piece of baggage in the roadway and swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the object. The tug he was operating overturned.*
Reports indicate that the luggage cart fell on top of the young man, crushing him. The deceased was working for Piedmont Airlines, which is owned by American Airlines.
A lawsuit was filed in Mecklenburg County Court on behalf of the victim.
A spokesperson for the airport stated that the city is dedicated to the safety of its employees and the airline passengers. However, workers argue that they are often in dangerous situations. The union refers to the area around Concourse E, where the victim died, as “Death Valley." The union believes the lighting in that area is extremely poor and creates risks for employees. Even prior to the victim's death, the union reportedly told management about poor lighting conditions in the area. Nothing has been done to improve the lighting since the tragic accident.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is also investigating the incident and has not yet released a report detailing its findings.
