College Student Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries After Pedestrian Crash in Greensboro, North Carolina

September 29, 2019

Greensboro, N.C. – Wbtv.com writes that a student from North Carolina A&T State University was struck by a vehicle last week. The 21-year-old college senior was attempting to cross a Greensboro street when she was hit. The biological engineering student is now fighting for her life after sustaining severe injuries.*

Recent reports indicate the victim is still in serious condition.

Witnesses to the accident stated that the student was crossing at a part of the street where there is no marked crosswalk, but where many students frequently cross. The driver who hit the 21-year-old exited their vehicle and ran to the victim’s aid. The accident is still being investigated.

North Carolina has one of the worse vehicle death rates in the country. A recent study found that the state comes in fifth in terms of traffic deaths. While many of the deaths involve vehicle collisions, North Carolina has a high number of pedestrian accidents as well.

Efforts to curb the number of traffic-related deaths in the area include the adoption of a Vision Zero program in Charlotte, where many of the deaths occur. Vision Zero programs have been implemented in many cities around the world and include a combination of efforts to reduce, and eventually eliminate all forms of traffic-related deaths. Vision zero initiatives use education, law enforcement, and engineering solutions to cut down on traffic-related deaths.

These programs have shown varying degrees of success in different cities. Authorities are hopeful that the state can reduce its high numbers of fatalities through the use of the program.

Reports indicate that while pedestrians and cyclists made up just 3 percent of all crashes in Charlotte, they account for close to half of all traffic fatalities.
