Deadly Car Crash Reported in Lee County, North Carolina

Lee County, N.C. – Abc11.com writes that a collision killed one person and injured three others in Lee County. The accident took place on U.S. 421 and Vernon Road. Four vehicles were involved in the crash.*

Emergency responders found one person dead and two others with severe injuries. The severely injured individuals were airlifted to the hospital while another person was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center by ambulance. 

Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the victims or the cause of the crash. The Highway Patrol is still conducting the investigation. 

North Carolina ranks among the deadliest states for automobile collisions. A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2017, North Carolina came in as the fifth deadliest state in the country for car crash-related deaths. About one in three of those deaths were the result of intoxicated drivers.

Many of the fatal crashes are taking place around Charlotte where though the city experienced fewer total collisions, it had an increased overall death toll. Speeding emerged as another major factor in these crashes, with about 40 percent of fatal accidents in the Charlotte area involving vehicles that exceeded the speed limit. 

Cautious drivers and vehicle occupants should remember that seatbelts go a long way towards preventing vehicle-related fatalities. Out of all those killed in Charlotte area car crashes, about 61 percent had neglected to use their seatbelt.

The state's poor record for traffic safety has sparked city officials to adopt a form of Vision Zero, a program which major cities across the globe have been implementing in order to reduce the number of people killed in traffic accidents drastically.
