Multi-Vehicle Accident Closes Interstate 77 Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte, N.C. – Wcnc.com writes that a six vehicle collision shut down Interstate 77's southbound lanes over the weekend. The accident took place in the afternoon causing delays from around Gilead Road all the way back to Sam Furr Road. While one express lane stayed open, there were still massive delays caused by the emergency response to the crash.*
The North Carolina Department of Transportation released images showing five-passenger vehicles were likely involved along with an RV. No fatalities were reported as a result of the accident, but two people were brought to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Chain reaction crashes present unique dangers for those on the road. Vehicle occupants may be subjected to multiple impacts leading to more opportunities for injuries to occur. Additionally, once the initial impact takes place, the vehicles are no longer in the position to absorb the additional impacts. Those individuals inside of the damaged cars risk getting struck by vehicles if they exit their own cars well.
Avoiding chain reaction crashes is often just a matter of ensuring that there is a safe amount of space between vehicles on the road. This can be challenging in high-speed situations where it is difficult for drivers to determine how much time it would take or their vehicle to come to a complete stop. When there is limited visibility on a roadway, the chances of being involved in a crash are even more likely. Adverse weather conditions, such as wet, slick roads or ice, also create a greater risk for these dangerous types of collisions. It is important for drivers on the road during inclement weather to travel with extra caution and to remember that sometimes even driving the speed limit is too fast for road conditions.
