Sunday Accident Involving Trucks Closes Down I-77 in Surry County, North Carolina

September 29, 2019

Surry County, N.C.- According to elkintribune.com, a massive collision between two large trucks caused the closure of Interstate-77.  The incident took place at Exit 85 and caused the closure of all of the interstate’s southbound lanes.*

Surry Emergency Services reported that they received a call about the crash at about 4:45 p.m. The authorities stated that in addition to the two big rigs, a passenger vehicle was sideswiped in the accident. Fortunately, no significant injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

The accident is currently being investigated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. By 6:50 in the evening, the Surry Emergency Services released a statement indicating that it would most likely take a minimum of three hours to complete the clearing of the highway. The authorities set up a detour to direct vehicles around the site of the accident. Prior to the implementation of the detour, traffic on the interstate was backed up for eight miles.

Accidents involving large trucks are extremely dangerous. The massive size of big rigs means that there is a high risk of any crash leading to devastating damage and injuries. Often, these crashes are caused by the truck drivers but are the result of other drivers on the road entering into the path of the truck. In fact, more than half of all accidents involving 18-wheelers are caused by passenger vehicles while the truck drivers cause only 32 percent. Speeding, distracted, and impaired driving are often the causes of large truck crashes. In recent years, reduced speed limits have helped to lower the number of large truck collisions by around 15 percent.
