Drivers who turn left in front of a motorcycle are the main cause of motorcycle accidents in the United States. According to the Hunt Report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “[t]he most common motorcycle accident involves another vehicle causing the collision by violating the right-of-way of the motorcycle at an intersection, usually by turning left in front of the oncoming motorcycle because the car driver did not see the motorcycle.” The NHTSA also provides in the report that single-vehicle motorcycle accidents are common when a motorcyclist crashes into an object (such as a tree) in order to avoid a collision with another vehicle that turned left in front of him or her.
