The Deadliest Highways and Interstates in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA – According to an online news report at patch.com, with Labor Day behind us and school having started, it is important to look back at the summer in terms of the number and types of accidents.*

In order to raise awareness on summer-time accidents, ASecureLife examined three years’ worth of data from 2015 to 2017 in order to determine which roadways had the highest amount of fatalities from May through September.  The security website used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System to determine which roadways were the “deadliest” in North Carolina and across the United States.  

Pursuant to their analysis, they determined that North Carolina’s most hazardous highway is Interstate 40, where there were 61 deaths during the summer months between 2015 and 2017.  The two additional deadliest roadways in North Carolina are Interstate 85, with 50 deaths and United States Highway 64, with 40 deaths.  

While wintertime driving comes with certain risks such as slippery roads and heavy snow, summertime driving is also replete with its own risks.  "With teen drivers out for summer break, families on long road trips, and fun outings like barbecues and beach trips, roads can be hectic and packed," noted ASecureLife.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, wintertime weather-related accidents resulted in over 1,700 deaths between 2007 and 2016.  However, ASecureLife found that nearly 1,800 deaths happened on average between May and September from 2015 to 2017.

Per ASecureLife, the top most fatal highways in the country are as follows (between May and September): California, Interstate 5 – 192 deaths; Florida, United States Highway 1 – 160 deaths; Florida, Interstate 95 – 158 deaths; Texas, Interstate 10, 154 deaths, Texas, Interstate 20, 151 deaths, California, United States Highway 101 – 139 deaths; Texas, Interstate 35 – 139 deaths; Florida, Interstate 75 – 122 deaths; Georgia, Interstate 75 – 111 deaths, and California, SR-99 – 110 deaths.
