Fatal Wrong-way Accident on I-40 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (NC)

SALEM, NC - An accident news story on journalnow.com reports that a wrong-way driver caused a serious accident along Interstate 40 between Winston-Salem and Clemmons in North Carolina.  According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal accident occurred when the wrong-way driver's Ford Bronco crashed into a westbound Mazda SUV by the McGregor Road bridge crossing.

The Mazda SUV driver and his passenger were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.  

The crash happened at around 6:12 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40 as rush-hour drivers were making their way to the Lewisville-Clemmons Road exit between the I-40/U.S. 421 split.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers do not know where the man got onto I-40 in the wrong direction.

Eyewitnesses of the accident contacted the news website stated the Bronco's headlights were not turned on as the vehicle made its way eastbound along the westbound portion of I-40.  The Winston-Salem police began receiving calls about the wrong-way motorist at around 615 pm. 

Although it was rush hour, there were not that many vehicles on the stretch of I-40 where she witnessed the wrong-way driver.  She stated that she was driving in the right lane, and she was approaching the Lewisville-Clemmons exit when she witnessed the Bronco traveling the wrong way.

Another eyewitness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that she noticed cars swerving out of the way to avoid the Ford Bronco as the SUV was traveling against the flow of one-way traffic.  The accident is currently under investigation.
