January 22, 2021

CHARLOTTE, NC - According to a bicycle accident news report on MyFox8.com, a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck and killed by a motor vehicle along Freedom Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina.*

Charlotte Metro Police Department officers responded to several calls concerning a bicyclist accident that occurred around 4 p.m. at Berryhill Road and Freedom Drive.  The motor vehicle's driver, an 81-year-old man in a Honda, struck the boy who was on a bicycle at the time of the collision.

The boy was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.  The boy tragically died due to the severity of his injuries the next day.

The initial accident investigation determined that the boy was riding his bike, and he stopped at a red light at the intersection.  The boy was within the crosswalk.  The driver stated that his light was green, the boy pulled out in front of him, and he was not able to avoid the accident.  The driver stopped and waited for the EMS and police to arrive.  Charlotte Metro Police Department officers stated no impairment seemed to be a factor in the fatal bicycle accident.

The accident is still under investigation.
