Detention Center Worker Killed in a Tragic Hit-and-Run Dump Truck Accident on I-85

December 17, 2020

According to an online news report published on wsoctv.com, a Rowan County detention center worker was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident.*

Troopers stated that the fatal accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-85 at approximately 7:30 in the morning.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Major John Sifford stated that the 25-year-old detention center worker was returning home after working her shift when she was involved in the accident.

Trooper Ray Pierce said the victim was driving home in her Toyota Corolla when a dump truck sideswiped her car and then fled the scene of the accident.  After the collision, she pulled to the side of the road to call for assistance.  Her vehicle was then rear-ended by a Chevy pickup truck traveling at approximately 70 mph.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident.  She was transported to a local area hospital, where she tragically passed away three days later.

State troopers are searching for the dump truck that caused the initial accident.  A photo of a similar dump truck was released to the public.  It is not clear whether or not the driver of the pickup truck would face criminal charges.
