Motorcyclist Dead in Tragic Crash on Interstate 40 in Raleigh, North Carolina (NC)

November 01, 2020

RALEIGH, NC- Cbs17.com writes that a motorcycle crash led to one fatality in Raleigh this week. According to police, the incident took place in the late evening on Interstate 40 close to South Saunders Street. Little information is available regarding the cause of the crash.*

Statistics in recent years indicate motorcycle deaths increased significantly in Virginia. In fact, in 2017, the number of motorcycle fatalities in the state rose by approximately 50 percent. This occurred even as the number of motorcycles registered in the state dropped. According to many motorcyclists, the problem is tied to the behavior of other drivers who often fail to look out for motorcycles on the road. Some motorcyclists state that they take precautions and keep an eye out for what drivers are doing in order to protect themselves. However, they say that drivers frequently change their lanes or turn without using signals and place other road users, especially more vulnerable road users, like motorcyclists, at risk.

Officials in the state claim that many motorcycle crashes take place because motorcyclists are traveling too fast for the road conditions. However, they admitted that are there collisions are the results of inattentive drivers or motorcycles ending up in the blind spot of a person in a larger vehicle. When it comes to driving safely on roads where motorcyclists are present, officials say keep an eye out for motorcyclists, always check blind spots, and anticipate that motorcyclists may make sudden movements, especially in cases where there might be road debris on the street.

Road debris creates a significant hazard to motorcyclists. Motorcyclists can improve their own safety by always using protective gear when they ride. Of course, helmets are one of the most important pieces of equipment, but goggles, gloves, other riding gear can also help reduce the risks for a motorcyclist. Always follow posted speed limits, and slow down even more if the weather is bad or the road conditions warrant extra caution.
