Officers Crack Down on Drunk Driving in North Carolina
NORTH CAROLINA - Police are starting an enforcement campaign dedicated to preventing drunk driving crashes. The efforts are starting as an attempt to raise awareness prior to the holidays.
The holidays are often plagued with a spike in drunk driving crashes. State and county officers will be on the lookout for drivers exhibiting signs of impairment. With the upcoming holidays, the police say that traffic levels will be on the rise and that with the increased traffic comes the risk of more wrecks. Officers intend to keep drivers compliant with traffic regulations by making themselves especially visible.
Unfortunately, North Carolina has a poor safety record when it comes to drunk drivers. The state is among the ten worst in the country for impaired motorists on the roadways. Drunk driving is one of the main causes of car crashes, especially serious and fatal collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 29 percent of fatal wrecks involved an alcohol-impaired motorist. In North Carolina, 411 of the 1,442 people killed in car crashes in 2018 died in motor vehicle collisions that involved drunk motorists.
Police also point out that alcohol is not the only substance drivers should avoid. Drugs such as marijuana and even prescription medications can cause impairment and make driving unsafe as well. Police remind citizens to prevent their friends and family from getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.
If you spot a suspected drunk driver, you can call 911 to report the sighting. Getting that driver off the road could save a life. Of course, any time that you get into the car, wear a seatbelt. Even if you are a responsible driver, you can never predict how other motorists on the road may behave. Buckling up is the best way to try to prevent being killed or injured in a motor vehicle accident.
