One Killed in Tragic Accident in Mebane ABB Facility in Orange County, North Carolina (NC)

September 11, 2020

ORANGE COUNTY, NC- Mebaneenterprise.com writes that one person died in a work-related accident in Orange County this week. The incident occurred at the Mebane ABB plant. The victim was identified as a 50-year-old man from Eden.*

The victim was reportedly on a loading dock at the ABB facility when a tractor-trailer struck him. Responders were called to the scene in the early afternoon. A witness stated that the victim had pulled his own truck into the dock and then exited the vehicle. As the worker was walking to the back of his truck, a second tractor-trailer pulling up to the dock struck him.

The incident is still under investigation, but reports state that no charges were filed.

Work-related accidents killed 178 people in North Carolina in 2018. Those numbers indicate a small decline as compared to 2017 when 183 people were killed on the job. The highest number of worker deaths for the state was 234, which occurred in 2000. Just three years after the record-breaking high, the state’s total number of worker deaths declined to its record-low, which was 109.

While North Carolina experienced a drop in 2018, nationally, the number of worker fatalities increased.

Transportation-related accidents were the leading cause of worker deaths in 2018. The state lost 84 people in work-related transportation incidents. These accidents increased from 73 in 2017, even as the total number of workers killed in North Carolina dropped.

Across the nation, transportation is the leading cause of fatal worker injuries as well. In 2018, 40 percent of workers who died on the job were killed in transportation accidents.

The transportation and warehousing industry was the deadliest for the state, with 31 deaths in 2018. Nearly half of those deaths involved freight trucking.
