The highest number of worker deaths for the state was 234, which occurred in 2000. Just three years after the record-breaking high, the state’s total number of worker deaths declined to its record-low, which was 109.

Across the nation, transportation is the leading cause of fatal worker injuries as well. In 2018, 40 percent of workers who died on the job were killed in transportation accidents.

The transportation and warehousing industry was the deadliest for the state, with 31 deaths in 2018. Nearly half of those deaths involved freight trucking.
