Car Crash on Bridge Injures Several in Morehead City, North Carolina (NC)
MOREHEAD CITY, NC- Carolinacoastonline.com writes that a crash took place in North Carolina, leading to several people being hospitalized. The incident occurred while the vehicles were driving across the Newport River Bridge.*
Reports state that two cars and one pickup truck were involved in the incident and that the wreck led to the closure of the bridge while crews worked to clear the scene.
The crash started when a Ford pickup truck and a Honda car were stopped in the westbound traffic lanes due to heavy traffic. A Volvo heading in the same direction collided with the rear of the Honda and caused the Honda to then strike the pickup truck.
Police cited the person operating the Volvo for failing to reduce speed.
No identities are available for any of the three involved motorists. Three people were injured and were all transported to the Carteret Health Care medical facility, which is located in Morehead City. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
Most rear-end crashes are the result of a driver failing to pay attention to the road ahead. Many rear-end accidents are small impacts that lead to minor injuries or nothing more than property damage. However, other times, these collisions are severe and deadly. Across the United States, 1,700 people lose their lives each year in rear-end accidents.
Crash prevention technology, which now comes on many newer vehicles, is able to avert many of these wrecks. Forward collision warning systems alert drivers when they are approaching another car or an object too quickly. This is often all that is needed to get an inattentive driver to refocus on the task at hand. Other cars will actually stop on their own, potentially averting a collision, even when the driver does not act.
