Tragic Truck Crash Kills One on Interstate 95/Interstate 40 in Johnston County, North Carolina (NC)
BENSEN, NC- Abc11.com writes that a crash left one person dead this week on Interstate 95 in Benson. The victim was in an SUV that collided with a large truck. The impact also injured a child who was in the SUV as well.*
Reports indicate that the truck collided with the rear of the SUV. The force of the crash caused the SUV to end up facing the wrong direction in the southbound lanes. The truck veered into the emergency lane on the roadside. The driver who was operating the truck is now facing misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charges in relation to the collision. The victims included a woman and a child, both of whom are from out of state. Reports have not released the identities of the people in the SUV. The wreck led to the closure of several lanes and to delays in traffic.
Large truck crashes were the only type of accident that caused more fatalities in 2019 than in 2018. Most types of collision-related deaths declined, including those involving drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. It is not currently clear why fatal crashes involving these massive vehicles rose while other types of crashes dropped. The numbers are early estimates and subject to changes, and it is too soon for researchers to provide explanations for the trends.
When it comes to these massive vehicles, there are many related risks for other drivers on the road. The size difference puts passenger vehicle occupants at a disadvantage in the event of a crash between these two types of automobiles. Braking is not easy in large trucks, and it takes them more time to come to a stop than is required by passenger cars. If the truck's brakes are not taken care of or in good working order, the difference in stopping distances is increased, and the risk of a crash goes up as well.
