Most Dangerous Places in North Carolina to Drive

August 19, 2020

NORTH CAROLINA- A study analyzing traffic in North Carolina found that the deadliest road in the state is Interstate 40. The researchers viewed traffic deaths over the summer months for three years in a row. During that time, 61 lives were tragically lost on Interstate 40, which was more than any other road in the state.*

In second place for dangerous roads in North Carolina was Interstate 85, where 50 people died in the course of the study, followed by US 64, which had 40 reported deaths.

While many people suspect that winter is a dangerous season to drive, the summer comes with serious roadway hazards as well. Teenagers are out in abundance during the summer months. Unlike the school year, these newly licensed motorists are not in school and are therefore free to hit the road far more often. Unfortunately, this could mean danger for the roadways.

Nationally, none of North Carolina's roads make it into the top ten. The worst road based on summer driving deaths was Interstate 5 in California, where 192 people died in the course of the study. The second and third place dangerous roadways are both in Florida, including US 1 and Interstate 95. Texas roads landed in fourth and fifth place with Interstate 10 and Interstate 20. California's US 101 falls into sixth place, Interstate 35 in Texas in seventh, Interstate 75 in Florida comes in eighth, Georgia's Interstate 75 in ninth, and SR 99 in California lands in tenth place. California, Florida, Texas, and Georgia, therefore, take all top ten spots on the list.
