Driver Strikes and Kills Utility Worker in Tragic Crash in on Granite Street in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)
CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a utility worker died in Charlotte this week following a crash that occurred in the early morning. Police responded to the scene of a pedestrian crash on Granite Street and found the victim on the road. At that point, the worker was already unresponsive. Responders declared the victim dead at the scene.*
The vehicle involved was a 2007 Honda Civic that was traveling westbound at the time. The driver was a 47-year old man.
Reports indicate that the victim was a 59-year-old man who was outside of his utility company vehicle at the time. The truck was parked near the scene of the deadly wreck.
Officers stated that the driver immediately reported the crash and stopped at the scene. Police do not believe that the motorist was under the influence or speeding at the time of the collision. It is not yet clear whether the driver will face any charges related to the incident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is aware of the crash. The investigation is still underway, and officers are requesting that anyone with information contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
In North Carolina, about 3,000 pedestrian crashes are reported annually. About 160 of these incidents result in fatalities. Another 850 cyclists are struck by cars, and an average of about twenty are killed.
Safety advocates state that speed should be reduced in order to lower the chances of a pedestrian crash resulting in death. For instance, at just 40 miles per hour, pedestrians face an 85 percent chance of dying from their injuries.
