Tragic Two-Vehicle Crash Kills One on River Fork Road in Laurens County, South Carolina (SC)

LAURENS COUNTY, SC- Wyff4.com writes that a crash killed one person this week in Laurens County. The victim was a 29-year-old man from Ware Shoals. The incident occurred in the middle of the night on River Fork Road.*

Police reports indicate that the victim’s car veered into the opposite traveling traffic lanes and struck another vehicle head-on. Following the impact, the victim’s car left the roadway and struck a fence before it ignited. 

Another person was also hurt in the collision, and responders rushed that individual to the hospital. The surviving victim appears to have been a passenger in the car that the Ware Shoals man struck. No identifying information is currently available regarding that individual. 

Head-on crashes cause just three percent of all accidents in the United States, yet they lead to more than one in ten traffic fatalities. 

Road designers can take steps to reduce the chances of a head-on collision taking place. Some methods of reducing head-on impact risks include the installation of barriers that prevent cars from drifting across the centerline. 

Medians can be made from concrete or out of cable barriers. In some cases, the barriers themselves are involved in crashes, but on high-speed roads, the risk of severe injuries and fatalities is much higher for a head-on impact than it is for a collision between a car and a traffic barrier. In some instances, barriers are not enough to stop head-on impacts. Wrong-way crashes take place when a driver enters a divided road heading against the flow of traffic.
