Crash Reported on Beulaville Highway in Richlands, North Carolina (NC)

August 07, 2020

RICHLANDS, NC- Wnct.com writes that a crash took place in Richlands this week that led to lane closures on Beulaville Highway. The incident reportedly occurred in the westbound lanes of traffic.*

The images from the scene indicate that a truck rolled over in the course of the wreck. Rollover crashes are one of the great risks to truck drivers. While truck rollovers only account for a small number of overall commercial truck incidents, they are the cause of more than half of trucker deaths.

In many scenarios, the issue is the roads themselves, which were often designed decades ago and fail to account for today's trucks and the volume of traffic. For instance, curves in the road that were created forty years ago have become hazards to modern commercial drivers because they do not allow these massive vehicles enough space to bank. Remediating this issue, however, will be extremely costly. Certain areas are known as hot spots for truck crashes. These locations have on or off-ramps that require drivers to slow rapidly and turn around sharp curves, often with limited visibility. In some places, the roads are marked with signs and lights that at least offer warnings to drivers operating large trucks. However, other locations do not even adequately mark such dangers.

The stakes for drivers are high, though, as the risk of fatal injuries is 30 times as high for drivers if they are in a rollover as compared to other types of traffic accidents. However, many such tragedies can be averted by truck drivers simply buckling up.

In some instances, these collisions take place because a driver cuts off a trucker without realizing that trucks require a great deal of time and distance to slow down.
