Pedestrian Killed in Tragic Crash on Monroe Road in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)

CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a car struck and killed a man who was crossing the street in Charlotte this week. The late-night crash took place on Monroe Street. Officers arrived at the scene to discover the victim unresponsive.*

Based on the early investigation, the driver involved was operating a 2012 Chrysler 300 and traveling in the right lane. The victim attempted to cross the road, and the vehicle struck him. 

According to investigators, it was raining at the time of the crash, and the road in the location of the accident does not have much lighting. The driver stopped and called 911, and responders transported the victim to Atrium Health with what were described as critical injuries. The victim died a short while later. Officers notified the victim’s family of the tragic crash. The road was shut down in both directions after the collision. 

Pedestrian deaths are up in North Carolina. In 2018, the state saw a 13.4 percent rise in such fatalities as compared to 2017. In 2009, the state hit a record low number of pedestrian fatalities with 148. Unfortunately, the number then began to rise and has now increased by 54 percent. Population size increases cannot explain the jump in pedestrian deaths because the number of such fatalities has increased at a pace that is five times that of the population growth over the course of the same time. 

Nationally, a similar trend is playing out. In 1980, the number of pedestrian deaths reached its highest point ever, with more than 8,000 fatalities. By 2009, the numbers declined nearly by half. Sadly, they then increased again, and are now above 6,000.
