Motorcycle Crash Kills One on NC 55 in Holly Springs, North Carolina

July 12, 2020

HOLLY SPRINGS, NC- Cbs17.com writes that a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in the late evening on NC 55 this week. The incident occurred close to the entrance to a Walmart. The motorcyclist was traveling southbound when a northbound Toyota Prius made a left turn off the highway and into the parking lot. The driver entered the path of the motorcycle, and the two vehicles collided, killing the motorcyclist.*

The motorist, identified as a 51-year-old man from Apex, is now facing charges for failing to yield the right of way. The authorities have not yet released the name of the motorcyclist who was killed in the crash.

Motorcycle fatalities dropped in 2018, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, because motorcyclists are less protected than other motorists, they continue to account for a disproportionately large number of traffic accident victims.

In addition to the fact that motorcycles have fewer safety or protective features, riders are less visible to other drivers on the road. Drivers frequently enter the path of a motorcyclist because they fail to notice the smaller vehicle. This is particularly a problem with left-turning cars. Left turning drivers are the number one cause of motorcycle crashes.

When it comes to staying safe on the road, motorcyclists should remember to take extra precautions as they approach intersections in which drivers are waiting to turn left. It is important for riders to be prepared to apply their brakes and slow down if a driver begins to turn in front of them. The best way to reduce the severity of a crash is to reduce speed.
