Two Vehicles Crash into Water on Interstate 95 near Fayetteville, North Carolina (NC)
FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Abc11.com writes that a crash on a bridge on Interstate 95 led to two vehicles reportedly falling into Cape Fear River. Officials were informed of the crash in the evening when a witness contacted police stating that the cars crashed into one another, and then both fell from the bridge.*
Cumberland County has a team of 40 individuals working to locate vehicles and victims. The team of rescue workers includes ten dive teams and nine boats.
While crews attempted to search the river the night of the crash, they were unable to find the vehicles. Local firefighters stated that the river could be nineteen feet deep in the area around the bridge.
North Carolina has more deadly crashes than most parts of the nation. In fact, a recent study indicated that the state ranks in fifth place in deadly collisions. Only Georgia, Florida, California, and Texas outrank North Carolina.
Alcohol is one of the major causes of these incidents. Close to one out of three crash-related deaths are the result of drunk drivers. Charlotte has been singled out as one of the reasons that the state has such large numbers of traffic deaths. Speeding and distracted driving are leading to many collisions in the state as well. Another issue is that many residents in the state still neglect to use their seatbelts. In Charlotte, 61 percent of those killed in crashes were not using their restraints.
The city’s poor traffic safety has led officials to implement plans to decrease the number of these wrecks. A Vision Zero Campaign is planned as a way to educate the public and improve infrastructure to reduce crashes.
