Pedestrian Fatalities in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, or CMPD, report that the city's initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities is not working as well as anticipated. According to The Charlotte Observer, 28 people died in 2019 on Charlotte streets. The 28 pedestrians killed in 2019 set a new, tragic record for the city. The increased number of tragedies illustrate the failures of Charlotte’s “Vision Zero” plan, which was established in 2017. Overall, the total number of victims in fatal car crashes investigated by CMPD dropped to 67 in 2019 from 77 in 2018.
Only two percent of all auto accidents in Charlotte involved pedestrians in 2017. However, 27 people tragically died while walking in Charlotte that year. The 27 pedestrian fatalities were a record for Charlotte at the time and represented 38% of all traffic deaths in the city.
Researchers indicate that Charlotte’s recent expansion and population growth account for some of the reasons why pedestrian deaths have sharply and rapidly increased over the last few years.
Charlotte’s version of “Vision Zero,” which the city modeled after Sweden’s inaugural program, contemplates redeveloping and redesigning roads, identifying areas where most accidents happen, and stopping motor vehicle violators, especially speeding motorists.
It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.
