Pedestrian Deaths on the Rise in North Carolina

July 13, 2020

RALIEGH, N.C. — Pedestrians in North Carolina are dying at a rate that has not been seen since 1990. North Carolina is not alone. The national trend indicates that more pedestrians are dying in more vehicle crashes at a rate not seen since 1990. As the pedestrian death rate increases, the number of total motor vehicle fatalities continues to drop. The explanation for the increase in pedestrian deaths is not easily defined, according to a report in the News Observer. Bigger cars, people driving at higher speeds, and inescapable distractions for both drivers and pedestrians are just some of the suspected causes of the sharp increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2009.

Large vehicles such as SUVs, a constant distraction from cell phone use, and consumption of alcohol are just some of the major factors contributing to the rise in pedestrian deaths over the last decade. Analysts from the North Carolina Department of Transportation indicate that alcohol consumption is one of the leading factors of pedestrian fatalities.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation attributes speed, lane departure, distracted driving, and driving while intoxicated as four main causes of auto crashes in general. The number of crashes attributable to each category of crashes has increased since 2013, according to the most recent statistics published by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
