Police Officer Hit While Investigating Tragic Crash on Interstate 485 in Charlotte, North Carolina

July 09, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC- Spectrumlocalnews.com writes that a crash took place this week in North Carolina that tragically killed five people. After the initial wreck, an officer helping at the scene was struck. A driver collided with the back of the patrol car, pushing the vehicle into the officer.*

The officer suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident and was rushed to a local hospital. The injured officer had been with the police force for two years.

The earlier crash involved four vehicles, including a truck. The incident occurred when a car collided with a box truck, causing the driver of the smaller vehicle to lose control and cross over the opposite lanes of traffic, eventually crashing off the roadside. The box truck also veered across the road and then collided with two cars heading in the opposite direction.

A family of four was in one of the cars that struck the box truck after the initial impact, and all four were killed in the crash. The other car that collided with the out of control truck was carrying two people, one of whom died, and the other was severely injured.

The driver who caused the initial wreck is from Charlotte. Police say that the man is injured as well. Charges are now pending against that driver.

The box truck driver was also hurt in the incident and suffered multiple broken bones. While serious, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Family members of the four people killed reported that the victims included parents and their daughters, who were twelve and seven years old at the time. The couple also had a fourteen-year-old son who was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Updated reports indicate that the driver who caused the horrific tragedy was traveling at about 100 miles per hour prior to the wreck.
