Pedestrian Dies in Traffic Crash on North Carolina Highway 52/Interstate 285 in Davidson County, North Carolina (NC)

July 09, 2020

DAVIDSON COUNTY, NC- The-dispatch.com writes that a pedestrian died in a crash in Davidson County this week when a large truck collided with the person on Interstate 52. Reports of the early morning accident indicate that police received a call that a person was in the roadway prior to the collision.*

Officers responded to the scene, but the victim had already been struck by the time responders arrived. The man was declared dead at the scene of the crash. The incident is still under investigation, and the authorities have not yet released the name of the person killed in the collision.

Pedestrian collisions are increasing in North Carolina, and in the United States. While the numbers continue to rise, the reason for the higher death toll is not entirely clear.

In 2018, 228 pedestrians died in the state, representing a more than thirteen percent increase compared to the number of pedestrians killed the previous year. Pedestrian deaths in the states have also far outpaced the rate of population growth, indicating that an increase in the number of people living in North Carolina cannot explain the disturbingly high number of pedestrians killed in recent years.

There are several likely factors leading to the documented increase in fatalities. One factor is that many drivers are more distracted now because of cellphones. Pedestrians are also likely distracted by their phones, thereby further increasing the risk of a crash. SUVs are another likely source of the increase in deaths, as these vehicles are more likely to cause fatal injuries to a pedestrian than would a small vehicle.
