Pedestrian Killed on Prosperity Church Road in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)
CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a pedestrian was killed in a crash in Charlotte, North Carolina, this week, along with the victim's dog. The incident occurred in the evening near the intersection of Pine Church Road and Pinewood Lane.*
The victim was only identified as a man who was walking his dog at the time of the crash. Both the man and the dog were declared dead at the site of the crash. Police reports indicate that the motorist remained at the scene. The authorities have not released any other information about the wreck.
The number of pedestrians killed in North Carolina has continued to increase each year. In 2018, 228 people were killed while walking in the state. The number indicates a rise of 13.4 percent as compared to the previous year. The number of deadly pedestrian incidents in the state hit a low of 148 in 2009 but then jumped by 54 percent. While the population increased during the same period, the rate of pedestrians killed increased five times the rise in population.
Nationally, a similar trend has played out, with deaths reaching their highest point in 1980 with 8,000 fatalities. The numbers then dropped to a low in 2009, when 4,109 people were killed in such accidents. From that point on, the numbers began to increase again. There are several reasons for the rising numbers, including an increase in SUVs, which are more likely to kill pedestrians, and an increase in people using cellphones while driving. Some even suspect that people are more likely to be walking after drinking in an effort to avoid driving drunk.
