Teens Killed in Tragic Crash on Interstate 40 in Guilford County, North Carolina (NC)
GUILFORD COUNTY, NC- Wxii12.com writes that a tragic crash occurred on Interstate 40 this week in Guilford County. The incident happened when a 2004 Honda Accord veered off the interstate and collided with a tree. The driver, identified as a sixteen-year-old boy, and three of his passengers, including two sixteen-year-olds and a fifteen-year-old, were killed in the collision as well. One fifteen-year-old survived the horrible wreck and is in the hospital.*
The victims were all heading into their junior year in high school. One woman witnessed the crash as she was driving with her mother. She stated that the Honda rolled multiple times, including flipping over nose down. The woman stated that she is a volunteer firefighter, and wanted to get to the scene to help, but could not safely pull over. Speaking to reporters, the woman described the tragedy that the victims were teens and expressed her sadness for the families. According to the police, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.
Teens were involved in 3,255 fatal wrecks in 2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Car accidents remain the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Traveling with teenage passengers greatly increases the risk of a collision for teenage motorists. When one teenage passenger is in the vehicle with another teenager, the risk of the driver engaging in a dangerous driving behavior rises by two and a half times. That risk goes up even more with additional teens in the car. Many states have graduated licenses that limit the number of teens allowed in a car with a teen driver.
