Tragic Crash Kills One on US 421 in Boone, North Carolina (NC)
BOONE, NC- Goblueridge.net writes that a three-vehicle crash left one person dead in Boone this week. The wreck occurred on US 421 at its intersection with Industrial Park Drive.*
When officers arrived on the scene, the victim was unresponsive. Responders rushed the man to the Watauga Medical Center, where he died a short while after the wreck. The victim was identified as a 59-year-old man from Liberty Landing. The other drivers were identified as a twenty-year-old man from Mountain City, Tennessee, and a 35-year-old man from Wilkesboro, both of whom were also injured in the crash. The two surviving victims were transported to the hospital for treatment.
A crash reconstruction team was on-site for several hours following the incident. The collision is still under investigation.
Nationally, vehicle occupant deaths have dropped in recent years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), overall traffic fatalities declined by 2.4 percent in 2018 as compared to the prior year.
Not all categories of fatalities have dropped, but fatalities involving children ages fourteen and under decreased by more than ten percent, drunk driving crashes were down 3.6 percent, speeding-related wrecks dropped 5.7 percent, and motorcyclist deaths declined by 4.7 percent.
Part of the cause for the decline in these areas is that vehicles are safer now than in the past. Pedestrians and cyclists, however, were killed in higher numbers last year. The NHTSA is looking to assess vehicles for their ability to protect vulnerable road users rather than just people inside of cars. The plans will alter the 5-Star rating system used to determine vehicle safety.
