Hit-and-Run Crash Tragically Kills Pedestrian on East Millbrook Road in Raleigh, North Carolina (NC)
RALEIGH, NC- Wral.com writes that a pedestrian was killed this week in an overnight crash at East Millbrook Avenue’s intersection with Departure Drive. The motorist was traveling eastbound when he collided with the victim.*
The pedestrian was identified as a 40-year-old man from Creedmoor. After striking the victim, the motorist fled the scene, traveling on Capital Boulevard in a white van.
The victim was transported to WakeMed but died from his injuries a short while after the deadly collision.
The driver, later identified as a 45-year-old man from Raleigh, has not been arrested in connection to the tragic incident.
A study conducted by the AAA found that hit-and-run crashes are increasing every year across the nation. Fatal hit-and-runs rose by a shocking 60 percent from 2009 through 2016. The average annual increase in deadly hit-and-runs was 7.2 percent.
The victims in these wrecks tend to be pedestrians or people riding bikes. The reason that vulnerable road users are the most likely people to be killed by a fleeing driver is that the drivers in these crashes have the opportunity to run. While a car might suffer minor damage in an impact with a person, the vehicle will often remain drivable. The same is rarely the case in a fatal crash between two vehicles.
The rise in deadly hit-and-runs is likely in part because pedestrian crashes are also increasing.
North Carolina ranks seventeenth in the nation in deadly hit-and-run accidents. The worst states for these incidents include New Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida. At the other end of the rankings, New Hampshire, Maine, and Minnesota have the fewest hit-and-run deaths in the nation.
