Crash Reported on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, North Carolina (NC)
RALEIGH, NC- Wral.com writes that a collision occurred between two vehicles at New Bern Avenue's intersection with Poole Road in Raleigh. The crash injured two individuals, and responders transported both to a nearby hospital.*
The injuries are not considered life-threatening, but the exact condition of the victims has not been reported. The wreck led to the closure of New Bern Avenue while police and other responders are working at the site of the accident.
Studies indicate that North Carolina is one of the deadliest states for traffic accidents in the nation. The report used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which indicates that the state ranks fifth in deadly collisions. The only states that ranked higher were California, Texas, Georgia, and Florida.
Part of the problem is Charlotte, where speeding and distracted driving lead to many fatal crashes.
Another issue is that many drivers are not using their seatbelts.
Nationally, overall crash deaths have been decreasing in recent years. The NHTSA writes that in 2018, traffic deaths dropped by 2.4 percent, representing a reduction of around 1,000 deaths as compared to 2017. While national traffic deaths are dropping, in North Carolina, the number of people killed has increased each year. In 2018, 1,449 people died in collisions, and in 2019, the number rose slightly to 1,472 fatalities.
Although the North Carolina Department of Transportation states that its goal is to "Make Transportation Safer," it has yet to meet the milestone that it set for itself. The state has a crash fatality rate of 1.19 deaths per mile. The objective of the state's DOT is to reduce that number to 1.15.
