Tragic Three Vehicle Wreck Kills One and Injures Infant in Charlotte, North Carolina (SC)

WEST CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a three-vehicle wreck killed one person and left two individuals severely injured this week. One of the injured victims was an infant, who was in critical condition following the crash.*

The incident occurred in the early evening on Billy Graham Parkway near Morris Field. The vehicles were in the southbound lanes, but no information is available regarding how the crash occurred. One woman was declared dead at the scene, another woman was injured, and the baby sustained life-threatening injuries. Reports did not indicate in which vehicles the victims were traveling. 

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is working to reduce the number of traffic deaths in the state. The number of fatalities per mile is 1.19 per 100 million miles. While the state's goal is to lower that figure to 1.15 or less, the rate has remained steady. In fact, while the number of traffic deaths has been dropping nationally, North Carolina has seen its numbers continue to rise. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that the number of people killed in vehicle accidents in 2018 was 2.4 percent lower than the previous year. In explaining the reason for the drop in traffic deaths, the NHTSA writes that a general decline in traffic deaths is largely the result of increased seatbelt use and a significant reduction in drunk driving. Other factors making the roads safer include improving vehicle safety features.

While vehicle safety features appear to be reducing crash deaths overall, pedestrian fatalities are continuing to increase, as are cyclist deaths. Although the overall numbers are trending downward, crashes still killed 36,560 people across America in 2018.
