Tragic Crash Kills Two in Rockingham County, North Carolina (NC)

June 16, 2020

MADISON, NC- Myfox8.com writes that a crash occurred this week in Rockingham County that left two people dead. The tragic incident started when a driver in a 2011 Honda was traveling south on US Highway 220 and approaching the intersection with Price Farm Road.*

The 43-year-old man operating the Honda lost control of the car near the intersection and entered the northbound lanes where he struck a 2018 Hyundai that was waiting to make a left-hand turn. The Honda then struck a 2016 Honda SUV in the northbound lanes, before flying into a utility wire, falling back into the northbound lanes, and striking a second Hyundai vehicle. The 53-year-old Stokesdale woman in the first Hyundai and the driver in the 2011 Hinda both died at the scene of the crash. The 25-year-old man in the Honda SUV and the 41-year-old man in the second Hyundai both survived the wreck.

The two people in the SUV, including the driver and a passenger, were both severely injured in the crash. Both were airlifted to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where they are now in stable condition. The incident is still being investigated.

Many crashes occur at intersections, and studies indicate that many of these collisions could be prevented through the use of alternative intersection designs. Researchers have shown that by installing roundabouts, many crashes, including the most serious collisions, can be avoided. In fact, the risk of being killed in a crash is about 90 percent lower at a roundabout intersection than it is at a traditional crossroads intersection. Injury producing crashes are about 75 percent less likely, and the overall number of accidents drops by 37 percent when roundabouts replace traditional intersections.
